Ceiling fans are one of the few
household appliances that can save you money - as much as 15 percent
off your energy bills - and look good enough to enhance the decor of any
room in your home. They are a pleasant blending of economical and
the aesthetic benefits.
Before shopping for your fans there are a few things you should
consider. Size and style are often the best place to start. Style is a
personal choice but selecting the correct size is something that should
be matched to the height of the ceiling and size of the room. Most
manufactures include this information on the box.
Here are some basic guidelines to consider:
- Up to 50-sq.-ft.-room: 30-in. ceiling fan
- 51- to 100-sq.-ft. room: 36-in. ceiling fan
- 101- to 200-sq.-ft. room: 42-in. ceiling fan
- 201- to 400-sq.-ft. room: 52-in. ceiling fan
Other considerations are optional features such as lighting and
remote controls. Do you want a wall switch or will the pull chains due.
Would you like a dimmer for your light or a speed control for the fan?
Controls. Standard controls for the fan motor and
lights include a pull chain from the housing of the
ceiling fan. Consider wiring the fan to a
wall switch (which may already be in place if you're replacing a ceiling
light with a fan) for convenience and to minimize the wear-and-tear on
the pull-chain switch and it’s housing. (These switches are often the
first things to wear out or come loose on fans.) By adding a wall switch
you can also dim the lighting and control the speed of the fan.
For the ultimate in convenience, look for a remote control to dim the
lights and control the fan speed. Many people enjoy having the control
on a nightstand by their bed or on a table in the family room. All
remotes come with a cradle to have it mounted on the wall with the
ability to bring it where you need it. Remotes can also be a big money
saver especially in you have no attic or a second floor above the living
area you want your fan installed.
There is a fan to meet any style and
budget.
